Private Art Gallery

Lavinia Private Art Gallery
In the heart of Kota Kinabalu stands a 1960s bungalow housing a private art gallery. In its attic. Lavinia was launched in October 2010, managed by artist and gallery director, Christianne Goonting, better known as TIANNE.

Tianne’s major collection feature elements of contemporary life inspired by the ethnic and natural heritage of Sabah. Delicate water colours of Sabah’s countryside and flora and bold, bright contemporary artworks – collector’s pieces – embody the spirit of uniqueness and individuality of her style.

Tianne’s artistic career started in 1981 with initial training in traditional Chinese brushwork, which instilled a spontaneous outright boldness in her strokes. Capturing the spirit of life is the compelling force behind her creations. Nature’s refreshing beauty, cultural and ethnic practices, indigenous artefacts, people, everyday life and trends are only part of the enormous well from which she draws her inspiration. Through her works, Tianne strives to preserve the disappearing heritage of Borneo.

Tianne criss – crosses from medium to medium, style to style, series to series, art to craft and back again demanding versatility, technical virtuosity, spontaneity and diversity that she finds invigorating, challenging and fulfilling. Tianne’s “potpourri” of spontaneous brush work, sensitivie-delicate water colour, colourful – stunning acrylics and collages feature side by side, united by a core of pure artistic experience and freedom of expression unrestrained.

Tianne strongly believes that living in an artistic environment (without focusing on the visual aspect only) is more enriching and fulfilling experience. For her, artistic awareness and appreciation are intergrated into our lives through our environment, the daily items we use, fashion, music, digital in so on.

Tianne’s works to date – fall under three major categories – tribute to nature, spirit within/spirit of life and ethnic heritage. Towards preservation and conservation, Tianne will also be featuring recycled materials in her art soon.

Adrian Ho – The Artist

In my art I seek the purity of our great Malaysian natural heritage. The demands and depth of oil on canvas are the tools of my artistic quest. I am passionate in my search and Nature’s many forms and sensory nuances become part of my art. The vastness and sublimity displayed by our great Mount Kinabalu; the solitude of the unspoiled Maliau Basin water system and rainforest; the jagged landscape lit by sunlight with its unique luminosity and contrasting deep shadows, the ever-present hidden forces of nature – all richly inspire and steer my artistic quest.

The beauty of the great Malaysian outdoors inspires but also saddens me with its constant struggle with annihilation. However, in nature I find a redeeming sense of hope, endurance, peacefulness and affirmation which I seek to share with others in my art.
